So you just completed your demo and it sounds great! Whats next? Of course if your like most bands you will play a few gigs and try shopping your demo to the record labels in hopes of capturing that elusive record deal. There is a much better way to shop your music and it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg to do it. What I am talking about is getting an entertainment lawyer to shop your music for you. Isn't that expensive? You might ask. And yes, it can be however, there are organizations that are set up to help artists that dont have allot of money. You may even get some legal services absolutely free! These organizations are called Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts. There is one in New York and it is a nonprofit organization which provides arts-related legal assistance to artists and organizations unable to afford a lawyer. They also provide counseling, workshops, a speakers bureau and publications, including an extensive list of publications for artists. Many of these services can help your act move ahead! There are many Voluntary Lawyers For The Arts organizations in many cities across the United States. I would however, recommend that you contact the organizations in the music capitals (New York, Los Angeles & Nashville). The Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts in New York can give you a list of other organizations in other cities. Call or write them for more information. Another wonderful organization is the California Lawyers For The Arts. They are a non-profit tax-exempt service organization which provides lawyer referrals, educational programs, publications and have a resource library for artists, performers, and writers. This resource library, available at no charge for members, contains sample contracts, magazines and books used by artists and attorneys. If you join this organization you can get huge savings on attorney fees. They also have some very cool workshops were you can learn a multitude of information about the music business. These organizations can help you with contracts between band members, contracts with clubs and other organizations. Trademarking your bands name, copyrights and of course negotiations with labels, management, publishers and any other types of industry personnel. I have their contact information listed below. I recommend that you call or write them and see what they can do for your act.
